Preventative Measures

Hi everyone,

Well, summer's finally over, and the real riding season in Florida has started.  It kicks off with Daytona's Biketoberfest, and right on schedule, some cooler air has made it down South here in South Florida. It's been in the upper 60's in the mornings, and the lower 80's during the day...and all the high pressure means no clouds, low humidity, and lots of sunshine!  Woo-hoo!  Makes me feel like a doggie in fresh grass!

Anyway, I wanted to talk about a little PM today.  I just put on some new tires (I really like the Avon Venoms on my full-dresser, and with every new tire, in goes a bottle of "Ride-On".  I buy mine from a guy on eBay...that's where the best prices are.

But what IS the stuff and what does it do?  My best answer is that it's some sort of water-soluble glue/filler that will immediately seal punctures.  IT WORKS.  It's not for after the fact, but before anything happens.  I just limped home last week with a 4" screw in the rear tire.  It lost a little air - I knew something was wrong, but it got me home safely and made what would have been a really crappy day tolerable.

It takes about 10 minutes to install.  You have to unscrew the little center piece  inside your tire valve stem, and then all the air comes out quickly, and you have a nice easy way to get it in.  You use a plastic tube and attach to the stem and the end of the bottle, and just squeeze it in.  For my big tires, I use the entire bottle for each, but it comes with a chart for how much to use.  So you squeeze it in, and then you take it for a minimum 12 mile ride right away to get it to coat the entire inside of the tire.  As a "bonus", it also automatically balances your tire, and you'll notice a much smoother ride as well.  That's it...  a little PM, and you won't have to call a tow truck if you pick up a nail or screw.

BTW: As a courtesy, I always let them know that Ride-On is in the tire, and it's not something flammable like "Fix-a-Flat".  Once they know it washes off with plain water, the mechanic who does my tires doesn't seem to mind at all.

I'll be back to the weekly blogging now that summers over, and we'll be running a new contest for some really cool prizes very soon.

I'd like to hear from you if you try out the Ride On, and let me know how you like it, etc.

Until next time, RIDE SAFE and HAVE FUN!
